The Redemptive Mess

This is where I stop tidying things up.

I'm a psychoanalytically oriented therapist. I spend my days helping people make sense of the ways they love and hurt each other. Knowing all that doesn't exempt me from it. Every so often, in my own family, in my own history, I lose my footing in exactly the places I'd confidently guide someone else through.

Those moments are not common. But when they come, they tend to cut straight to the bone, and they teach me more than any textbook ever has. These are the stories from those moments: unedited in spirit, sometimes uncomfortable, always true. Not the polished lessons, but the rupture itself, and what comes after, if we stay long enough to find out.

Because here's what I keep learning, in my office and at my own kitchen table: the mess is not the failure of a relationship. Very often, it is the way in. The fight that shows us what we were actually afraid of. The apology a child offers before we've managed our own. The repair that only becomes possible because something broke.

An algorithm will never let you down like this. It will also never forgive you, surprise you, or change you. Real people will.

And somewhere in all that mess, something larger than either of us tends to show up: a grace we didn't earn, a softening we couldn't have forced. That's the redemption I'm writing toward. Come see what that looks like.
